Design Village 2022 Peoples Choice Award Winner
Design Village is a yearly competition hosted by Cal Poly in the hills of San Luis Obispo. It has a long history and has become one of the most anticipated architectural events in SLO. Competitors designed and built "shelters," which said competitors had to transport by foot and inhabit throughout the entirety of the weekend.
I, along with two others, inspired our design from the children’s toy, the Hoberman sphere. For ease of transport to the hills, like the toy, the structure was contracted and rolled to the desired site. Upon arrival at the site, it was expanded and staked alongside the beautiful landscape.
Each steel joint and wooden arm was welded and crafted over the span of three weeks. Its complex engineering and design prompted several hardships, but in the end, it came out better than we expected. The sails on the exterior provide shade yet allow for visibility of the other projects and the surrounding views.
